Ephraims Bilateral Clubfoot Journey

Sweet Ephraim, 10 days old.  This is the day he was going to get his first cast put on.  He had no idea what was going to happen and was just as content and happy as ever. Love that cute smile!

Just a few shots of his cute feet before the casting and boots start.
At 10 days old Ephraim got his first casts put on by Dr. Shaw at Childrens Hospital in Colorado Springs.  First a Physical Therapist came in and measured his feet, then she held them in place while Dr. Shaw wrapped them, there was also a nurse helping.  I tried to comfort him as best I could, but it was no fun!  He cried through it, but slept really good afterwards.  That first night was rough, with Ephraim waking up every couple of hours.  He used to go a food 5 hour stretch at night, but we could tell that he was uncomfortable.  We gave him some tylenol to help and he settled down.  He is still so sweet.

His casts are blue and are fiberglass. I assumed they would be plaster, but was happy to find out they could do fiberglass.  Dr. Shaw said he prefers the fiberglass is it is possible.  On little guys like Ephraim it works, because they are so small the fiberglass is strong enough to hold them in place.  I was happy because they are not as heavy, which is better for him and his hips and muscles.  At first the Dr. said he would have them on for 8 weeks, but then with the first casting he said maybe only 5 or 6.  After that he will be in a boot with a bar for 3 months at 23 hours/day and then for nights only until he is 3 years old.  He has a bit of a road ahead for him.  He had a moderate case, the Dr. said on a scale from 1-10 he is about a 5 or 6.  We feel good about the braces and bar and have high expectations that they will work and no surgery will be needed.  It is amazing what the human body can do and we are so glad to live in a day and age with so many medical advancements and knowledge.
